Salsa comes from Cuban and New York/Puerto Rican roots. It's danced to fast, upbeat music with lots of turns, spins and quick footwork. It's exhilarating — but the speed and the spinning mean there's a bit more to coordinate early on.

Bachata comes from the Dominican Republic. The music is slower and more romantic, the basic step is a simple side-to-side, and the dance rewards connection and musicality over raw speed.
