Classes teach you to dance; socials are where it comes alive. Social dancing is simply partner dancing out in the real world — freestyle, to a DJ, with whoever's there. If you're new to it in Perth, here's what to expect and how to feel at home fast.

What is a social?

A social (or "social night") is an evening of freestyle partner dancing. There's no choreography and no performance — people simply ask each other to dance, one song at a time, and rotate. It's relaxed, friendly, and the whole point of learning to dance in the first place.

What to expect your first time

Expect a welcoming room, a mix of levels, and plenty of people happy to dance with a beginner. You don't need to know much — a solid basic step and a bit of timing is enough to have a great night. You can also just watch, chat, and ease in.

A little etiquette goes a long way

It's always okay to ask anyone to dance, and always okay to say "maybe later" — a polite no is completely normal. Look after your partner: dance to their level, keep them safe, and keep it fun. Both people share that responsibility, and it's what makes a floor feel good.

Rise by Refinery

Our own social, Rise by Refinery, runs most months. We aim to host a quality event worthy of a night out, with the warmth of going to a friend's gathering — a welcoming place to practise everything you've learned, whether you're a regular or brand new.

How to get ready

The best preparation is a few Beginners classes so your basics feel automatic. After that, the only way to get comfortable social dancing is to do it — and everyone at Rise was once at their first social too.
